Calpe Spain – An Overview

Located on an attractive stretch of coastline north of Benidorm, Calpe is one of the renowned northern Costa Blanca resorts of Spain. This former fishing village has developed into a popular holiday destination during the last forty years and its skyline is now somewhat marred by high-rise hotels and apartment blocks, the trappings of mass tourism.

The population is a cosmopolitan mix of native Spanish and north Europeans, who have chosen to purchase holiday homes, or even settle permanently in the town. Dominating the town of Calpe Spain and providing one of the Costa Blanca’s best known landmarks, the precipitous Peñon de Ifach (Penyal D’Ifac) rock rises vertically from the Mediterranean Sea in the Bay of Calpe. Now a protected nature reserve, the Peñon de Ifach was the location of the original town (then called Ifach), until the threat of pirate attacks diminished when it was moved to the more level seafront area around the bay.

The town along with the entire region benefits from a wonderful climate with the most notable feature of Calpe weather being that it comprises over 3,000 hours of sunshine annualy. The weather is no doubt on the resorts biggest draws, along with its sandy beaches and good facilities.

Calpe is located on the northern Costa Blanca, Spain, between the huge tourist resort of Benidorm and the tranquil coastal resort of Moraira, it can be reached from the N-332 coastal road and also from the A-7 motorway.

Calpe is around 75 kilometres from Alicante airport and about 100 kilometres from Valencia.
